Anti-Police Riot Enters 2nd Night

BENTON HARBOR, MI-June 18, 2003Police say ten to 15 people have been hurt in a second night of anti-police violence in a southwestern Michigan community.

Hundreds of people in Benton Harbor have been protesting over the death of a motorcyclist during a police chase. The rioters set at least five buildings and five cars on fire.

Police say the rioters shot one passer-by in the shoulder and beat and stabbed others. None of the injuries is reportedly serious.

Dozens of state troopers and other police officers used tear gas early this morning to quell the latest violence.

Several people have been arrested. The Benton Harbor police chief calls the violence "so unnecessary." He says it's "unbelievable" to see it in his community.
